About this class
Meeting Tuesdays from October 13 through November 24, 2026, with no class November 10. Learn the fundamentals of safe, low-impact camping. From knot tying to navigating with a compass, students leave this class ready for their first overnight adventure.
What students learn
- ✓Tent pitching, take-down, and proper care of camping gear
- ✓Selecting a safe campsite and Leave No Trace principles
- ✓Building and safely extinguishing a campfire; fire-by-friction basics
- ✓Knot tying: square, bowline, two half-hitches, taut-line, sheet bend
- ✓Lashings and useful camp gadgets (BSA Pioneering basics)
- ✓Map and compass navigation; identifying terrain features
- ✓Outdoor cooking and meal planning for an overnight trip
- ✓10 Essentials, weather awareness, and outdoor safety
